Caregiver Support Services
A caregiver may be a family member or close friend of a person with cancer. You are there to support your loved one in daily tasks and with positive encouragement. You need support too.
How to Help Yourself
- Make your own wellness a priority—you need to take care of your own health to be there for your loved one. Remember to eat well, see your doctor, get rest, exercise, relax, and take a break to do things you enjoy.
- Stay organized—Make a schedule to balance your other responsibilities with the care you are providing. Include time to do things you enjoy.
- Create a support team—Make a list of people who offer to help with contact information and the tasks they are comfortable doing (and your loved one is comfortable having them do).
- Set boundaries—There is a limit to what you can do. Recognize when you need to ask for help.
- Seek help—Community volunteers and support services for respite care, home care, and hospice can provide needed help.
